Extra Credit Project Solutions (1st Semester)
Directions:
· Choose a topic and project from the list below to complete. The topic should cover items you were least successful in mastering.
· All projects are due by: December 19. NO EXCEPTIONS
· Projects will count as a TEST/PROJECT Grade. No class time will be devoted to these projects.
Atomic Structure
Choice #1:
Use the BUILD AN ATOM virtual lab simulation found at: http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/build-an-atom
* You will need to have JAVA installed on your computer (free download)
Complete all responses on the lab assessment BUILD AN ATOM handout
Choice # 2:
Design and create 3D Bohr models of at least 3 atoms (choose from Carbon, Oxygen, Neon, Chlorine, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Fluorine)
o Models must be sturdy (not losing pieces or easily crushed)
o Models must be anatomically correct (energy rings, protons, neutrons, electrons)
o Models must be easily recognized as the atoms they represent.
Lewis/Electron Dot Structures
Choice #1:
Create a children’s storybook that describes how to create a Lewis Dot Structure for:
· A single element
· A covalent bond
· An ionic bond
The storybook must contain:
· Characters
· A plot
· Narration
· Illustrations
Choice #2:
Create a song (any genre) that describes how to create a Lewis Dot Structure for:
· A single element
· A covalent bond
· An ionic bond
The song must contain:
· A tune ( you may use any tune you wish i.e. Mary had a Little Lamb, It’s all about that Bass….etc.)
· A verse for every type of structure (single element, covalent bond, ionic bond)
· A chorus
· The song must be performed in class
